Before a squat/deadlift day or any training where you need to use the hips explosively, you should always make sure the hips are primed and ready to go. At CrossFit Detroit Lakes we use tools and exercises to do this. Below are some great ideas on how to get you started.
The main exercise we do is banded walking. If you do not have a band you could use a old bike tube or even a bungee tie down.
Walk with big strides forward, backward, and side shuffle trying to stretch the band using the hips. Do this 30 yards each way.
We practice squats and deadlifts with the band as well. When squatting or lifting focus on driving the knees out into the band getting the hips and gluts activated.
